Heavy Rains Cause Flash Flooding in Downingtown Borough
By Minquas Fire Company No. 2
July 10, 2010
As of 5:00 AM this morning, NOAA Weather reported that a slow moving cold front was approaching the Downingtown area. This front was accompanied by heavy rains and the potential for flash flooding. Heavy showers moved through our area in the morning hours and caused flooding, wire and transformer problems, and road closures throughout the Borough. Minquas Firefighters, most newly certified as Water Rescue Technician level responders, responded to the call to assist our neighbors. Engine 46-2, Squad 46, and Minquas EMS responded along with Downingtown Public Works, Downingtown Police Department, East Bradford Public Works, and West Chester Police Department to areas impacted by flooding. Minquas responded to two weather related wires calls, including one in East Bradford Township, and assisted the Police Department with notifications to residents that were in danger of rising flood waters. Crews returned to station shortly after the rain subsided after 1 PM.
Minquas Fire Company reminds residents to use caution when traveling in heavy rain conditions and to obey posted road closing signs and barricades. When driving, use slow speeds, stay alert, and watch for changing roadway conditions. Also do not attempt to drive through a flooded roadway because the water that you see may be much deeper than what is visible in some low lying areas.
