By Minquas Fire Company No.2
July 7, 2014

On Friday, July 4th the Downingtown Fire Department and surrounding agencies attended Downingtown Borough's Good Neighbor Day at Kerr Park. This is a yearly event that brings the community together for Independence Day. The day starts early in the morning with the annual Run for Life 5K, 10K & 15K throughout the borough streets. The cool weather and clouds provided ideal running conditions for all runners and walkers. Following the race members of the Downingtown Water Rescue team donned their water gear to assist those in the canoe race at the Johnsontown Dam in Johnsontown Park. The canoe race starts in Kerr Park and follows the Brandywine to the Georgia Farm Bridge in East Bradford Township.

In the afternoon hours members returned to their respective stations on standby for any emergency calls. During this time Minquas members spent their time cleaning the station and playing an annual wiffle ball game in the station. The game ended when the Downingtown Fire Department was dispatched to an Automatic Fire Alarm at Devereux Day School in East Caln Township. Engine 46-1 made the response with a full crew along with Tower and Engine 45. No services were needed and all unites returned to station within a half hour.

Around 5:00pm all apparatus returned to the park for dinner and to prepare for the fireworks display at dusk. Engine 46-2 and Brush 45 relocated to the fireworks launch site while the remaining apparatus remained in Kerr Park. Following the fireworks show crews assisted with traffic control and ensuring everyone in the park exited safely.

The officers of the department would like to thank everyone who assisted with this event and the surrounding agencies who participated in various standby activities. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
